Unit 8

I guess if I had to chose two of the practices that we have been trying over the last 8 weeks that I found most beneficial, I would choose the subtle mind and meditation.  The subtle mind one was my favorite because it did not have you imagining colored lights coming out of people's bodies or anything too far fetched.  The subtle mind was all about focusing on your breathing and listening to your thoughts.  To me this seemed something simple enough that you can do just about anywhere and for any length of time.  It can be done on your 15 minute break at work or before bedtime at home.  Just focusing on breathing always seems to calm the mind down for me.  You really need to focus on that in order to breath deeply and properly.  I have used this concept before at work when customers push my nerves a little bit too far with all their whining and complaining.  Instead of following my need to punch them in the face, I smile and say no.  Afterward I go outside for a minute to breath and focus on my thought.

  1. You're exactly right about that Subtle Mind exercise that I find can be a quick remedy to a bad situation happening. Just pausing to "gel out" can not only calm the mind but refocus us when needed. I do it for very short sessions of only 3-5 minutes. It's just enough usually.

  2. LOL, I think that is why I was able to relate to the subtle mind better then many of the others ones. I still laugh when I think of the light spectrum meditation we had to do and the colors coming out of us. I always reflect to my niece and her obsession with unicorns. ANyway back to your post. :) I agree that it is simple enough to do anywhere. WHich can be beneficial if you find your self in a stressful situation and need to breathe and calm the mind. Lol, I definitely think the smiling and saying no would be a better choice at work too. Meditation for me requires staying still for to long so that doesn't work well, but stepping away before my temper gets the best of me and breathing has saved me from many physical alterations. :) THank you for your post.

  3. Robin,
I TOTALLY agree with your choices of which practices were helpful. I had a hard time buying into alot of the other exercises as they required far too big of a break from the norm for me (such as visualizing the light shooting out of various people!) however, the subtle mind exercise was one which I felt was similar to how I had cleared my mind in the past. I have always turned to the beach, ad the sound of the waves crashing on the shore as a way to bring quietness and peace into my mind when I was stressed or upset. the added benefit of focusing on breathing that the subtle mind exercise presents was one that I truly enjoyed.

  4. I have always used the same technique when trying to deal with customers when I worked retail. My husband, who has worked retail fro 20+ years, calls it "going to his happy place." Haha.....

  5. Hi Robin,

I have to agree I like the subtle mind exercise as well. I even had my husband doing it. I couldn't quite get into the meditation exercise though. Maybe it was because I had too much going on at the time. I plan on trying it again though. I would love to punch some people in the face at work also but I don't think that would be the best route to take although sometimes a little eye roll makes all the difference in the world ;-). Thanks for the great post.
